1 Grupo indígena mexicano que habita en el norte del estado de Chiapas, cerca de la frontera con Tabasco. También existe un pequeño grupo guatemalteco en el sureste del Petén. Su religión es una mezcla de creencias católicas e indígenas donde los santos, el Sol, la Luna, las cuevas, las montañas y los "espíritus metedores" tienen gran importancia. Es famosa su veneración a la imagen del Crísto negro de Tila. Vive en un territorio montañoso formado por planicies de vegetación exuberante en el sur y con clima húmedo y excesivamente cálido en el norte. Sus actividades principales son el cultivo del maíz, café, caña, arroz y la cría de cerdos y aves de corral
